Daily Reflection: A Hard Heart
Ezekiel 10:19 “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.”

This is the first known description of atherosclerosis, sometimes called hardening of the arteries. We live a life with a divided heart. My daughter regularly asks me, “Do you love it with your whole heart, or just with half a heart?” She is teasing me, but behind those teasing words is a serious concept. That which we love with our whole heart controls our day-to-day actions. If we love our own creature comforts, the more we will spend our time on making ourselves feel good. But if we love God with our whole heart, we will be better able to make wise lifestyle choices. We will exercise our body so we can better serve Him. We will choose healthy foods so that we can better serve Him. We will spend time with Him because we love Him with our whole heart.

What do you love with your whole heart? If it is unhealthy food, today is the day to make some changes in your life.

Are Sugar Substitutes Safe?
Which sugar substitute should I use? Should you use the pink, yellow or blue? Pink is saccharin. It has the greatest amount of research behind it and has been in our food supply the longest. Blue is aspartame. It has lots of Internet folklore about it, but no damaging research. Yellow is the newest. It is Splenda. It has the least research behind it. All of these train our taste buds to love the sweet taste. None seem to be dangerous to our health. However, the jury is still out. Other options are Stevia, a natural sugar substitute, or Agave Nectar, also a good sweetener.

The safest recommendation: If you are going to use a sugar substitute, try Stevia or Agave. If you don’t like them, try to rotate the other three so that you minimize any unknown effect. Honey can also be a nice alternative.
